Storm Preparedness

During Storms:

During a Flood - Do not walk through moving water more than 6 inches deep. If using kerosene heaters, maintain ventilation to avoid the toxic fumes. Avoid travel and don't travel alone. Stay on main roads and be sure to tell others where you are going. Do not drive into flooded areas.Keep heaters away from flammable objects.

During a Winter Storm - Conserve fuel, shut doors to rooms not being used. Maintain ventilation to avoid buildup of toxic fumes. Keep others informed of your schedule, avoid travel when at all possible and don't travel alone. Be sure you have an emergency kit in your car if you do venture out.

- clean rain gutters, and check the structural ability to sustain heavy weight from snow or water accumulation.

- dress for the season, cold weather means wear several layers of loose-fitting, warm clothing rather than one layer of heavy clothing. Make sure outer garments are water-proof.

- keep cars fueled

- know how to contact household members through a common out-of-state (area) contact in the event that you become seperated

- know how to turn off gas, electic power and water prior to evacuation
