Type I PFD offers the most buoyancy. It is designed to turn most unconcious wearers in the water to a face up position.

Type II PFD / Buoyant Vest

Type II PFD offers the some buoyancy. It is designed to turn some unconcious wearers in the water to a face up position.

Type III PFD / Flotation Aid

Type III PFD offers the some buoyancy. Fishing vests and ski vests are examples of Type III PFDs Wearers may need to lean there heads back to get their face out of the water.

Type IV PFD / Throwable Device

Type IV PFD offers some buoyancy. It is designed to be thrown to people in the water. Examples of a Type IV device include life-saving rings, and cushions.
