Smoke Detectors :

- A smoke detector should be located outside of each bedroom. In addition one should be located on each story of the house. Smoke detectors are encouraged for attics and basements as well.

- There are kinds of smoke detectors.

battery operated
electric
hard wired

if your detector is hard wired be sure that it is not connected to a circuit that can be turned off by a wall switch.

- Because smoke rises, smoke detectors should be installed close to or on the ceiling. Detectors should not be installed near a window, door or vent where drafts could reduce its sensitivity..
- Test your detectors on a regular basis and be sure to change the batteries a minimum of once per year, whether it needs it or not! Never "borrow" the smoke detector batteries.
- Be sure that all family members including children are aware of what a smoke detector sounds like and test that they can be heard from all bedrooms. .
- Detectors should be cleaned on a regular basis, additionally do not paint smoke detectors.
- If you are traveling be certain that the hotel has a smoke alert system.
